The Future of EV Off-Roading

Updated: Nov 4, 2022

EV Off Road Track Marks

Several automotive companies taking steps forward and installing charging stations at popular off-road sites, EV trucks are a prime candidates for future off-roading adventures. Are EV trucks the future for off-roading? EV trucks could potentially outnumber gas-powered trucks off-road, however, that's still quite a ways down the road (or trail) in the future. They have all the right criteria to handle all that off-reading entails. With ongoing efforts to add more chargers, there will be little holding back EV trucks on the trails.

Ev Truck for Off-Roading Advantages

Off-roading requires torque, rapid acceleration, and ground clearance. EV trucks not only meet these requirements but surpass them. They also provide another bonus: water fording.

  • Torque - High torque at low speed is essential to get you through tough and challenging terrains like sand and mud. EV trucks can provide instant torque at any speed. Any off-road enthusiast knows that high torque at low speeds is the goal. Whether you’re rock crawling in Moab, slinging mud on the Trans America Trail, or the beach at Pismo, torque helps you get out of tricky situations and have fun doing it. Instant torque at any speed is a key feature of electric performance cars which has been touted again and again. Electric trucks will be able to do things today’s off-road community can only dream of.

  • Rapid Acceleration - The majority of electric vehicles can accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in under 8 seconds.

  • Ground Clearance - Electric motors are more compact than gasoline engines. As a result, they take up considerably less space, thus providing higher ground clearance.

  • Water fording - Electric motors are very well-encased. The protected motor plus additional ground clearance makes the impassable stream passable. Water fording might be the coolest part of off-roading. When coming face-to-face with a seemingly impassable creek, stream, or river, a traditional car must turn back, while a solid off-road rig can drive right through. The main thing to watch out for when driving through deep water is usually the engine intake located in the grille of the car. Once the water level reaches the intake, the engine can flood, leaving your car permanently bricked. To get around this, the most awesome off-road rigs will add a snorkel located near the roof of the vehicle so that the truck can ford through the water much deeper than the grill.

  • 4WD made easy - Perfectly tunable torque and power at each wheel at any moment? Yes, please! Electric vehicle manufacturers and custom tuners alike have been implementing four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive via multiple motors placed at each axel or each wheel.

  • Backup Engines - When an engine fails, an internal combustion vehicle needs a tow truck. These come at a hefty price when you’re in the middle of nowhere. When an EV with an engine at each motor fails, there are three backup engines to rely on.

  • More Lift For Your Buck - Lift kits are essential to any real off-road vehicle. Besides helping trucks get over seemingly-impassable parts of the earth, lifting a truck helps protect critical parts of the machines. Since electric vehicles don’t require most of the components of their internal combustion counterparts, there is a lot less need for that protection.

In addition to the standard V-6 and optional four-cylinder hybrid, the Wrangler can also be equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 with a similar hybrid assist, a 3.0-liter diesel V-6; a new, 375-hp plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain and a 6.4-liter V-8 are also available. Wranglers are born off-road ready, so part-time four-wheel drive is standard across the range and is controlled by a lever on the center console.

Conclusion:

It is no doubt that EV trucks could be the future of off-roading. With its given capabilities it will soon outnumber gas-powered trucks. It may not be now yet since charging stations are still in the works to have enough once more supplies come. EV trucks can provide durability and reliability for off-roading.
